What is oud?

Oud — also called agarwood or "liquid gold" — comes from the resin-rich heartwood of the Aquilaria tree. As the wood darkens, it develops a deep, smoky, slightly sweet aroma that perfumers have prized for centuries. In Pakistan, as across the Gulf, oud is the scent of celebration: weddings, Eid gatherings, Jummah and special dinners.

• Mist once onto your clothes, shawl or dupatta; oud clings beautifully to fabric.
• Don't rub your wrists together — it flattens the top notes.
